As of 2006, Charlotte boasts 199 neighborhoods and 630,478 residents, making it the 20th-largest city in the nation.

History

Charlotte was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mechlenburg, and is therefore nicknamed the Queen City and is appropriately located in Mecklenburg County. During the Revolutionary War, Charlotte was home to an encampment site, making the city a place full of rich American history. Aside from its American Revolution mark in history, the city is also known for the first American gold rush when a 12-year-old boy''s 17-pound door stopper turned out to be solid gold. Until the Gold Rush, Charlotte was the country''s main producer of gold.

Education

The fastest-growing university in the state system is the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The school is tucked into University City, the northeastern section of Charlotte. Other colleges in Charlotte are Central Piedmont Community College, the largest community college is both Carolinas, and private schools such as Queens University of Charlotte. Public grade schools in Charlotte are run by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the 2nd-largest public school system in North Carolina and the nation''s 20th-largest. The district administers to 161 schools and enrolls 132,000 students.

Recreation

The possibility of things to do in Charlotte are nearly endless. Many annual events are held by the city of Charlotte, including the CIAA Basketball Tournament early every March where historically-black colleges throughout the nation compete for glory. The Art and Soul of South End Festival is a major showcase in Charlotte every year, displaying all sorts of art work, music and entertainment. Several major events coincide with the festival to bring a great amount of culture to the city. Taste of Charlotte is a festival every June where Tryon Street is closed for the weekend and the city's best restaurants hand out samples of their original dishes. Golf is a major sport in the Carolinas and is usually played year-round due to the fair weather. Many choices are available in Charlotte for the avid golfer.
