South Charlotte is distinct from the rest of Charlotte's hustle and bustle yet, it still shares a great wealth of history and recreation with its large city. Another defining characteristic of South Charlotte is its eclectic selection of restaurants, ethnic grocery stores, and many sidewalk cafés with menu options from multiple cultures.

Nearby attractions include the Charlotte-Douglass International Airport and the luxurious Ballantyne Resort. The city offers 1,000 acres of parkland, boasting nature trails, recreational fields, picnic areas and fishing holes. Golf is a major sport in the Carolinas and is usually played year-round due to the fair weather. Many golf course choices are available in Charlotte.

Education

The fastest-growing university in the state system is the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The school is tucked into University City, the northeastern section of Charlotte. Other colleges in Charlotte are Central Piedmont Community College, the largest community college in both Carolinas, and private schools such as Queens University of Charlotte. Public grade schools in Charlotte are run by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the 2nd-largest public school system in North Carolina and the nation's 20th-largest. The district administers to 161 schools and enrolls 132,000 students. The school district also has 46 schools featuring magnet programs. Several outstanding private schools are also available in the city.
