Home to 154,000 residents, Union County is located on the borderline between the Carolinas. It is divided into 9 townships with Monroe as its county seat.
About Union County
The county received its name as a compromise between the Whigs' Henry Clay County and the Democrats' Andrew Jackson County. The 9 townships that make up the county are Monroe, Goose Creek, Jackson, Vance, Buford, Marshville, New Salem, Lanes Creek and Sandy Ridge. As of 2000, there were 43,390 households in the county and 34,278 families with a population density of 194 people per square mile.
Events and Recreation
Every year, the county hosts several community events, including the Queens Cup Steeplechase in Mineral Springs. This is one the of sports' major annual events and is made up of several races and a Jack Russell Terrier judging contest. Over 10,000 people attend this day-long event every April. Also in Union County, in the town of Marshville, is the Boll Weevil Festival, an autumn street fair and carnival. The county's Cane Creek Park is 1,050 acres of land around a 350-acre lake. The park is family-oriented with water-based activities for outdoor recreation throughout the year.
Education
The county is served by Union County Public Schools, which administers to 50 schools and education centers. The school system includes a program called Academically and Intellectually Gifted for students who display high ability and great potential, and who require a different education. Wingate University is a private liberal arts college located within Union County in Wingate. The public school, the University of South Carolina at Lancaster is also nearby. South Piedmont Community College serves the county as well.
